Thailand Strengthening Digital Resilience

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Data leaks are increasingly prevalent in the digital era, often stemming from internal issues rather than external cyberattacks. This trend offers a silver lining for organisations, as it suggests that proactive measures can be effective in detecting criminals before malicious actors exploit them. In response to these challenges, Mr. Prasert Chandraruangthong, Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DE), has taken proactive steps by instructing the Office of the Personal Data Protection Board (PDC) to address cybersecurity and privacy concerns swiftly.

A recent incident underscores the importance of safeguarding personal information, including ID card details and health data, to uphold personal data protection laws effectively. Adhering to these regulations not only ensures legal compliance but also protects individuals from potential repercussions such as fines and imprisonment, contingent upon the severity of data breaches.

Mr. Siwarak Siwamoksatham, Secretary-General of the SCHO, affirmed collaborative efforts with the Office of the Election Commission (EC) in investigating the incident. Initial actions have been initiated, with the NCPO directing the EC to coordinate with various platforms to halt the dissemination of leaked information. Enhanced measures are being implemented to safeguard the personal information of election applicants and voters, ensuring all data is handled with appropriate authorisation.

Furthermore, the SCCC is working alongside the Election Commission to enforce stringent protocols aimed at preventing unauthorised data sharing. These protocols include limiting the disclosure of personal information to essential tasks, restricting access to relevant officials, and implementing rigorous verification procedures before any data release. The PDPC’s Inspection and Supervision Office conducts regular audits to maintain robust data security standards and minimise the risk of breaches.

Highlighting the pivotal role of the PDPC Eagle Eye Center, the Secretary-General of the NCPO emphasised its commitment to monitoring and investigating data leaks promptly. The centre collaborates closely with relevant agencies to swiftly remove and rectify any leaked data. Individuals can report suspicious activities, including the spread of fake news and online crimes, to the GCC hotline 1111 or via the Line Official Account (@antifakenewscenter channel), as well as by email to csoc@mdes.go.th.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of data protection and the continuous enhancement of cybersecurity measures. As technology evolves, both individuals and organisations must remain vigilant in safeguarding personal data against emerging threats. Operational shortcomings, such as technical glitches and human mistakes, are the primary culprits behind most data leaks. To prevent such incidents, organisations must adopt a robust, multi-layered cybersecurity strategy and uphold a strong commitment to data privacy.

Looking ahead, the landscape of data protection and cybersecurity will likely grow more complex. It will require proactive investments in cutting-edge security solutions and ongoing training to mitigate evolving risks effectively. Regulatory bodies are expected to strengthen data protection laws, emphasising compliance and accountability. By staying informed, proactive, and compliant, organisations and people can better protect themselves and their stakeholders in an increasingly digital world.

Recognising both the challenges and opportunities of the digital era, the Royal Thai Government, under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, has initiated its Digital Economy and Society Development Plan. This comprehensive framework aims to harness digital technology as a cornerstone for advancing the national economy and societal progress. It involves redefining paradigms across all sectors, reforming business operations, production, trade, and services, enhancing efficiency in public administration, and ultimately improving the quality of life for its citizens. These initiatives align with the government’s commitment to fostering Thailand’s prosperity, security, and sustainability, as outlined in its policy objectives.
