The Philippines, represented by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr., emphasised its dedication to leveraging human-centred AI innovations for sustainable development at the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology, and Innovation (AMMSTI-20), the 85th ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI-85), and related meetings.
These meetings provided a crucial platform for ASEAN member states to discuss and exchange views on strategies for promoting STI within the region and with dialogue partners.
Hosted by the Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MISTI) of Cambodia, the event gathered ministers, vice ministers, and representatives from all ASEAN highlighting the region’s strong commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) in the region.
The Philippines’ delegation, led by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr., included notable figures such as Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Leah Buendia, Undersecretary for Scientific and Technical Services Ms. Maridon O. Sahagun, and representatives from the DOST International Technology Cooperation Unit, ensuring comprehensive representation at the event.
During the sessions, the Philippines showcased its collaborative projects within ASEAN, including the ongoing Scholarship Offerings for ASEAN CLM (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar) Researchers. These initiatives are designed to foster a self-reliant and resilient ASEAN community by utilising the power of science and technology to address regional challenges.
“We are committed to working together with our ASEAN counterparts to explore the frontiers of science, technology, and innovation for the benefit of our region and beyond,” stated Secretary Solidum.
In addition to the main meetings, several other important sessions were held throughout the week. These included the 16th Board of Advisers to COSTI (BAC-16) Meeting, the 60th Meeting of the Subcommittee on S&T Infrastructure and Resource Development (SCIRD-60), the 13th Meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Cooperation Committee on S&T (AJCCST-13), and the 6th Meeting of the ASEAN-ROK Joint Science, Technology, and Innovation Committee (AKJSTIC-6).
The active participation of the Philippines in these meetings underscores its commitment to regional collaboration in STI. By engaging in these high-level discussions, the Philippines aims to drive innovation, enhance regional cooperation, and contribute to the sustainable development of ASEAN.
Through initiatives like the Scholarship Offerings for ASEAN CLM Researchers, the Philippines demonstrates its dedication to building a robust STI community within ASEAN. These efforts not only aim to address current regional challenges but also to prepare ASEAN for future technological advancements and economic shifts.
The Philippine delegation’s presence and active involvement in these meetings signify the country’s proactive stance in strengthening ASEAN cooperation. By focusing on human-centred AI and sustainable development, the Philippines seeks to harness the transformative power of STI for the collective benefit of the region.
These ministerial meetings, held annually, and COSTI meetings, held biannually, are pivotal in shaping ASEAN’s collective approach to STI. The next COSTI meetings are scheduled to take place in Singapore in October 2024, while the subsequent AMMSTI is planned for June 2025.
The Philippines is actively seeking to foster global relations and partnerships to boost digital innovation and achieve its national ambitions. By collaborating with international stakeholders, the country aims to drive technological advancements and enhance its position in the global digital economy.
OpenGov Asia reported that the Philippines made a significant impact at the ASEAN-India Women Scientists Conclave in Singapore. Co-organised by COSTI, A*STAR, and the Government of India, the event featured discussions on AI, healthcare, and sustainability. DOST Undersecretary Sahagun highlighted the growing role of women in STI and anticipated ongoing collaboration.
As ASEAN continues to navigate the complexities of modern technological landscapes, the role of cooperative initiatives like AMMSTI and COSTI becomes increasingly vital. The shared commitment to STI within ASEAN, exemplified by the Philippines’ active participation, promises a future of enhanced connectivity, innovation, and regional prosperity.
