President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. underscored the pivotal role of technology and innovation in elevating workforce productivity and improving the quality of life for Filipinos during a recent speech. President Marcos highlighted that the administration’s strategic focus on technology aims to drive progress across multiple sectors, enhancing both individual livelihoods and national infrastructure. He acknowledged that the Philippines benefits from a steady stream of skilled professionals, with around 170,000 students graduating annually in fields such as engineering, IT, and sciences. These graduates are expected to contribute significantly to the country’s technological and industrial advancements.

The President reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting this talent pool by providing more opportunities for learning and skill development. This commitment aligns with broader objectives outlined in the National Science and Technology Plan and the Philippine Development Plan. Through the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) programme, the government aims to implement high-impact research initiatives that foster innovation and technological growth.

In addition, the Board of Investments is developing a comprehensive support package for electronic companies aiming to enter or expand their operations in the Philippines. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract and support investments in the technology sector, ensuring that the country remains competitive on the global stage.

President Marcos called upon stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by these technological advancements and to collaborate in creating a “Bagong Pilipinas” – a new Philippines characterised by robust digital transformation and reinforced aspirations. He highlighted the importance of deepening partnerships and engaging in constructive discussions to drive forward the nation’s technological ambitions.

The President acknowledged the organisers for their efforts in staging events that showcase the Philippines’ technological progress and industry standards. He acknowledged the significant role these exhibitions play in stimulating a globally competitive environment and providing innovative solutions for various sectors, from construction to electronics.

Recognising the efforts of participants in the technology and innovation industries, President Marcos emphasised their impact on generating employment opportunities and advancing the nation’s technological capabilities. He noted that the growth of these sectors not only contributes to a digitally connected future but also enhances the country’s competitive edge by leveraging its highly skilled and well-trained workforce.

By fostering a technology-driven environment, the administration aims to address complex industry challenges and create pathways for sustainable growth and development. President Marcos’ address highlighted the critical role of technological innovation in achieving these goals, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to a future where digital transformation and innovation are central to national progress.

OpenGov Asia reported that the Philippines is committed to leveraging technology to enhance citizen service delivery and streamline public services across the nation. The Philippine Identification System Act establishes PhilSys, a national digital ID to streamline transactions and enhance access to services. This system aims to improve service delivery, reduce fraud, and advance the digital economy.

The Philippine Statistics Authority is expanding registration to include infants and using mobile units for remote areas while partnering with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to efficiently register 4Ps beneficiaries. The PSA has issued physical, printable, and digital IDs with robust security features to protect personal data and support the digital economy.

The government’s focus on leveraging technology and innovation underscores a broader vision of national advancement. By investing in the country’s technological infrastructure and supporting its talent pool, the government is laying the groundwork for a prosperous and digitally connected future for all Filipinos.
