Polytechnic University (PolyU) of Hong Kong and Hangzhou and Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province have embarked on a collaboration that focuses on technological innovation to propel scientific advancements and cultural tourism development in both cities.
The official establishment of the “PolyU Wenzhou Technological Innovation Research Institute” was marked by a signing and unveiling ceremony at the Wenzhou People’s Congress Hall. This strategic initiative aims to create a dynamic technology centre in Wenzhou, emphasising technological innovation, talent cultivation, and research and development services.
PolyU inked cooperative agreements with the People’s Government of Wenzhou and the Management Committee of Wenzhou Bay New Area. The Chairman of the PolyU Council and the Secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee were among the key figures witnessing the event.
The collaboration seeks to catalyse the development of core technology research, talent cultivation, innovation and entrepreneurship, supporting high-quality local economic development.
In his address, the Chairman of the PolyU Council stressed PolyU’s commitment to research and innovation, leveraging its robust research capabilities and top international talents to provide a solid foundation for deep collaboration.
The collaboration aims to explore new methods, concepts, and perspectives in research, accelerating the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements, and driving the efficient upgrading of industries.
The Secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee expressed that innovation is inherent in Wenzhou’s genes. The collaboration is seen as an engine for Wenzhou to construct a national innovative city, build trillion-yuan industrial clusters, and connect with international high-end innovation resources. Wenzhou is committed to providing efficient services and top-tier support for the construction and development of the Technological Innovation Research Institute.
The PolyU delegation, during their visit to Wenzhou, engaged in activities such as visiting local universities, conducting seminars on the Institute’s development plans, and showcasing research technologies to local enterprises. The collaboration also seeks to deepen academic and cultural exchanges between Wenzhou and Hong Kong, fostering mutual benefits.
PolyU and the People’s Government of Gongshu District, Hangzhou, inaugurated the “PolyU Hangzhou Technological Innovation Research Institute.” This institute collaborates with Hangzhou on Grand Canal culture and tourism, smart transportation, and smart medical aesthetics.
The research centres within the Institute focus on leveraging Hangzhou’s strengths in information technology, the internet, cultural tourism, smart cities, biomedicine, and high-end equipment manufacturing.
As an important provincial capital in national planning, Zhejiang Province has been dedicated to promoting the coordinated development of education, science and technology, and the economy. These research institutes established by PolyU serve as hubs for cooperation between Hangzhou and Hong Kong and Wenzhou and Hong Kong, contributing to Zhejiang Province’s emergence as a vibrant and innovation-driven core area. The collaboration aims to support the country’s scientific and technological innovation and cultural tourism development.
OpenGov Asia earlier reported that PolyU and the People’s Government of Luyang District, Hefei City, formalised a partnership to establish “The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Hefei Institute of Technology Innovation”. The venture is poised to become a nexus of cutting-edge technological advancement, fostering profound industry-academic research cooperation and the cultivation of exceptional talents.
This institute will spearhead a series of projects with a specific focus on biomedical sensing precision technology and aerospace information. By concentrating on these fields, it aims to propel scientific research development, facilitate academic exchanges, nurture future experts, and facilitate the transfer of knowledge.
In addition, PolyU and the Jinjiang City People’s Government launched the “Hong Kong Polytechnic University Jinjiang Institute of Technology Innovation” in September 2023. The Institute aims to advance technology and innovation in the Minhang region, with key figures from both institutions and government levels present at the ceremony, underlining their dedication to fostering innovation and education in the area.
