The Hong Kong Generative AI R&D Center (HKGAI) unveiled a diverse array of AI projects at InnoEx 2024, showcasing groundbreaking applications across various sectors. With funding from the HKSAR government’s InnoHK initiative, HKGAI has embarked on eight ambitious projects aimed at developing tailored foundation models for applications spanning legal, medical, and creative domains in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Supported by its independently developed model, HKGAI introduced ten innovative generative AI services and applications, offering attendees an immersive firsthand experience:
- Expert Consultation Service Chatbot: A real-time consultation service Chatbot capable of providing expert advice across multiple domains, such as legal counsel and tour guidance.
- An Encounter Across Time And Space: Utilising user-uploaded photos to create animated sequences and composite images.
- Let deepfakes nowhere to hide under AI’s sharp eyes: Introducing Deep-fake Detection Technology, designed to discern real content from digital manipulations effectively.
- Resurrecting Glory: A Rebirth of the Past: Bringing historical figures and legendary stars back to life to reinterpret contemporary songs.
- AI Instantly Transforms Stories into Videos: Text to Video Conversion service, swiftly transforming textual content into full-length videos.
- 3D Image Content Generation: Showcasing high-quality 2D-to-3D assets generated by AI.
- Future Writing-Copilot: An AI-powered office assistant aiding in various writing tasks to enhance work productivity.
- AI Illustrates: Future Greater Bay Area Of A Thousand Miles: Providing visually stunning renderings of the 11 cities within the GBA.
- AI Singer App: Allowing users to upload voice samples and hear songs sung in their own voices.
- Smart Photo Diary: Analysing user-uploaded photos to create personalised stories reflecting their emotions and activities.
The HKUST Provost and Director of HKGAI expressed pride in the completion of the first locally developed foundation model, supporting both Chinese and English languages. This achievement marks a significant milestone in AI innovation for Hong Kong, showcasing the region’s capability in pioneering AI research and development.
Positioned strategically within Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, HKGAI is committed to leveraging its unique strengths to foster local AI talent and address ethical, safety, and governance concerns associated with AI technology and its applications. The centre is dedicated to driving economic growth through innovation, enhancing Hong Kong’s global standing in AI research and application domains.
Established in October 2023, HKGAI stands as the premier R&D centre specialising in generative AI under InnoHK. Led by HKUST in collaboration with five esteemed regional universities, including The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the National University of Singapore, HKGAI focuses on advancing generative AI technologies tailored to address societal needs.
The InnoEx 2024, organised by the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau of the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, provided a platform for HKGAI to showcase its cutting-edge innovations and technologies.
HKGAI, established in October 2023, is dedicated to advancing generative artificial intelligence technologies. As a key initiative of the Hong Kong SAR Government’s InnoHK program, HKGAI collaborates with top-tier institutions regionally and internationally to develop cutting-edge AI solutions tailored to societal needs. Additionally, HKGAI conducts research on ethics, security, and governance in generative AI technologies, contributing to the advancement of AI research and application domains.
