A new strategic partnership is set to establish a sustainable, hyper-connected AI-ready data centre campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. This initiative targets the needs of hyperscalers, next-generation AI application providers, and enterprises seeking accelerated digitalisation and cloud solutions in the region. Leveraging extensive subsea cable networks, the collaboration promises enhanced global connectivity, lower latency, and improved reliability.
The development of this hyper-connected AI-ready data centre marks a significant phase in the digital evolution of ASEAN. The collaboration aims to transform the region into a preferred digital hub destination, fostering the digital ecosystem’s growth, benefiting businesses, and nurturing future talent. This venture underscores a commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions, marking a pivotal step toward becoming a digital powerhouse by 2030.
The initial phase of the data centre campus will be designed for 64MW, with potential scalability up to 200MW based on market demand. It will adhere to the latest standards for reliability, security, and sustainability, offering superior local and international connectivity. Positioned close to subsea cable links between Singapore and Malaysia, the data centre will be strategically placed to support the increasing digitalisation and development initiatives of both countries.
The campus will be equipped to host extensive computing and AI capabilities, catering to the requirements of cloud hyperscalers and GPU-as-a-Service providers. Advanced technologies, such as liquid cooling, will be implemented to efficiently support high-power density workloads and operations. The data centre will also be a LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building, emphasising a commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable practices.
Contributing to the region’s network infrastructure deployment, the partnership aims to deliver a customised range of wholesale data, connectivity, data centre, and platform solutions catering to both local and international needs. In addition, cloud services will be provided through a sovereign Cloud solution.
With seven existing data centres across Malaysia, including two core data centres in Klang Valley and Johor, the venture is poised to significantly enhance the region’s data centre industry. The establishment of an international Cable Landing Station at Johor and participation in the Asia Link Cable Systems (ALC) partnership, which involves laying a 7,200km submarine cable system with an initial design capacity of 24 Terabits/sec, are critical infrastructure enhancements supporting this growth.
The regional platform, backed by leading global investment, leverages its data centre operations to expand internationally. Customers will have access to a range of services, including a cloud orchestration platform and upcoming GPU-as-a-Service. This setup will enable the orchestration of AI workloads in a multi-network and multi-cloud environment, serving as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, and business excellence.
In addition to the Johor campus, the partnership is developing three new AI-ready data centres in the region, adding to an existing 62MW capacity in Singapore. This includes a new 58MW data centre in Tuas, Singapore, and data centres in Indonesia and Thailand, which will bring the total pipeline capacity to over 200MW in the next three years. These data centres will be supported by a comprehensive network of subsea fibre-optic cables, ensuring robust and reliable connectivity.
The initiative highlights a forward-thinking approach to meeting the burgeoning demands of digitalisation and AI capabilities in Southeast Asia. By establishing cutting-edge data centres equipped with advanced technologies and sustainable practices, the partnership is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the digital landscape of the region. The focus on scalability, reliability, and energy efficiency ensures that the data centres will meet the evolving needs of businesses and AI application providers, fostering a robust digital ecosystem.
