Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the People’s Government of Gulou District, Nanjing announced the establishment of the “Hong Kong Polytechnic University Nanjing Institute of Technology Innovation” (the Institute). This collaboration aims to leverage PolyU’s research resources to promote exchanges in education, technology, and talent between Hong Kong and Nanjing. The joint venture aspires to build a top-tier domestic and internationally recognised strategic technology innovation platform, facilitating project implementation, incubation, and industrialisation for mutual benefit.
The unveiling ceremony saw the presence of key figures from PolyU the new PolyU Nanjing Institute of Technology Innovation; officials from the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee, the Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology and more. The Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Nanjing Municipal Party Committee were also present and spoke with the PolyU Council Chairman and his delegation regarding the Institute’s unveiling.
It was noted that PolyU will collaborate with enterprises and the government in the Nanjing area to leverage their combined strengths, promoting technological innovation and integrating government, industry, academia, and research to support local economic and social development. The Institute is expected to become a globally influential technology innovation incubation base, driving forward Nanjing’s scientific research and contributing to the country’s technological advancement.
The Institute’s establishment signifies a shared vision and common research development goals between PolyU and the Nanjing Municipal Government in technological innovation. The collaboration will enhance effectiveness through complementary strengths, achieving mutual benefits. Embracing innovative thinking, they aim to explore strategic emerging industries and deploy strategically in areas such as the next generation of artificial intelligence. This shared vision facilitates the rapid establishment and development of the Institute’s projects.
An official echoed the Chinese President’s emphasis on technological innovation as a critical component of Chinese modernisation, as highlighted during the National Science and Technology Conference and the National Science and Technology Awards Conference. The Institute’s establishment would aid Jiangsu in developing new productive forces and implementing the President’s vision. Gulou District will actively integrate local universities, research institutions, and enterprises’ resources and facilities to support the Institute, providing comprehensive government and talent services.
Institute representatives presented on research areas including artificial intelligence, life and health, green construction, and the environment. They outlined the overall development direction and construction plan after the Institute’s establishment in Nanjing to government representatives, research institutions, and enterprise guests.
The Institute will house four research centres:
- The “Intelligent Robotics and Mechatronics Research Center,”
- The “Artificial Intelligence and IoT Innovation Research Center,”
- The “Intelligent Construction Research Center,” and,
- The “Visual Health Innovation Research Center.”
These centres will engage in deep collaboration with the Gulou District Government to provide cutting-edge technology innovation research and development services to enterprises and research institutions, aiming to make Nanjing a world-class smart city and advancing technological innovation in these fields.
Furthermore, to strengthen the integration of technological and industrial innovation, the Institute signed multiple framework agreements with 13 entities, including the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, and the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University. These agreements aim to promote new industries, business forms, and models, expanding new development spaces.
Additionally, PolyU celebrated the establishment of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Jiangsu Alumni Association with a founding ceremony and dinner following the unveiling. Over 300 guests gathered to share this joyous moment. The establishment of the Jiangsu Alumni Association will strengthen PolyU’s mainland alumni network, promoting the development of mainland alumni work and enabling PolyU to participate in national development more actively.
This strategic collaboration signifies a pivotal step towards enhancing Hong Kong’s technological footprint. By integrating advanced research and fostering innovation, the Institute will not only facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise but also drive economic growth and technological advancements.
