Digital transformation and the widespread use of the Internet impact how individuals integrate technology into their lives and acquire the skills necessary to thrive in the modern workplace. In Thailand, this transformation is spearheaded by initiatives like the National Digital Economy and Society Commission’s (ONDE) training activities, which aim to elevate the population’s digital literacy and capabilities.
Mr Thirawut Thongphak, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission, presided over the opening ceremony of training activities aimed at enhancing the digital capacity of the population, preparing them to become proficient digital citizens.
This initiative is part of a broader project to survey the status of media and information literacy across Thailand. During the event, Mr Thirawut delivered a special lecture on “Digital and the Elevation of Quality of Life Standards of the People,” attended by civil servants and officers of the Office of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission (ONDE) at the Skill Development Institute in seven provinces of Ubon Ratchathani.
The training session focused on three critical areas for navigating the digital landscape effectively. The topics covered were meticulously designed to cater to the diverse needs of participants, ensuring they gained the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the digital era.
Digital Literacy for Thai Citizens
The first segment of the session highlighted the fundamental importance of digital literacy in today’s interconnected world. This part of the training aimed to underscore the pivotal role that digital tools and platforms play in modern life.
- Understanding Digital Tools and Platforms: This included a deep dive into common software applications, online services, and digital communication platforms. Emphasis was placed on how these tools can streamline tasks, enhance productivity, and facilitate connectivity.
- Role in Modern Life: Participants learned how digital literacy can empower individuals to engage more effectively in the workforce, stay informed about current events, and maintain personal relationships.
Skills in Understanding and Using Digital Technology
The second part of the session focused on equipping participants with essential skills for effectively understanding and utilising digital technologies.
- Navigating Digital Technologies: They learned how to use devices for various tasks, from managing emails and social media accounts to utilising productivity software and online resources.
- Utilising technology Efficiently: Participants gained insights into how technology can be harnessed to improve efficiency and effectiveness in various aspects of life.
Cybersecurity
The final segment of the training addressed the critical issue of cybersecurity, an essential component of digital literacy.
- Protecting Personal Information: Participants were educated on cybersecurity principles, including safeguarding personal information and digital assets. The training covered key concepts such as creating strong passwords, recognising phishing attempts, and understanding the importance of software updates and security patches.
- Securing Data in the Digital Realm: The session provided practical tips and strategies for protecting data from unauthorised access and cyber threats. Participants learned about various security measures, including encryption, two-factor authentication, and safe browsing practices. The aim was to empower attendees with the knowledge to protect themselves and their data in an increasingly digital world.
Further, participants are given applicable training, such as Learning and Self-Development on Online Systems, Supervision of Children’s Digital Use, Using Technology to Support Careers, Digital Commerce, and Technology Used in Daily Life.
This comprehensive training initiative is crucial to building a digitally literate society in Thailand. The efforts of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission, under the leadership of Mr Thirawut Thongphak, demonstrate a commitment to fostering a digitally empowered population capable of thriving in an increasingly digital world.
